What is Holistic Skincare?

In my most recent Google business page post I gave a brief description of what LG Health and Beauty skincare focuses on.

"At LGH&B Holistic skincare is the focus. This means plant based skincare products*, healthy eating habits, a balanced lifestyle for best results and staying away from the MedSpa style glitz and glam of Fillers, Botox, Micro-needling, Micodermabrasion, and other medically invasive and harsh style treatments. Your skin is a beautiful living breathing thing and it should be nurtured, cared for with TLC, and given the best nutrients to live it's best life. Aging is a part of life. Aging with beauty and grace is a choice. Skincare does not have to be complicated or painful. Coaching you to your best skin is the mission. We all have skin but all people has different needs to get their best skin results. It is important to have someone in your corner helping you to pick the best products and weed through the millions of choices on the market today. Visit our Blog today and learn online what you need to get your best beautiful skin results."

Now, what exactly does "Holistic" skincare mean?

I feel it is important to be on the same page about the definition because when I have searched holistic skincare the result is often not what I am looking for.

This brings up a whole list of other buzz words being used today:

Holistic
Organic
Natural
Naturalpathic
Alternative

This list gets really long very quickly so I will stop here for now and discuss buzz words in more depth on another post.  For now I want to define these five words as they will be used on my blog so we are on the same page.

Holistic: Treating the skin topically with good from the earth plants such as fruits, veggies, and other herbs and essential oils as well as honey and milk. The whole body must be taken into consideration during treatment to get the best results meaning what is being consumed as well as applied also is a factor.

Organic: Comes from the earth not synthetically made in a lab or genetically altered. This does include petroleum and animal products.

Natural: Comes from nature. Can be interchanged with Organic.

Naturalpathic: Using nature and the bodies own systems to heal and protect the body.

Alternative:  Outside of conventional medical science.

Now I want to be clear in stating that conventional medical treatments for skin health is necessary and helps many people every day.  In my over personal view I feel and think that many people turn to conventional medicine to treat a problem but never find the root cause.  Example: Cystic acne - often treated with conventional medicines with good results.  Problem is it often returns and the person has no idea why. Returning to the medicine, which is often harsh on the body, but the doctors and person never takes a look at what is being applied to the skin or what may be going on through nutrition that is adding to these types of breakouts.  I am not a medical doctor nor will I tell a person to not seek medical treatment.  In my skincare I simply want people to take a look at the whole picture and educate them selves, better yet, empower them selves to their total skin health.  I am a California State Board licensed Esthetician since 2009, always reading and learning to gain the most educated knowledge possible and I consider myself a dam good at what I do because of it.  With that I am your skincare coach. Helping to better understand choices and why what you are doing is affecting their skin.  I do not have to worry about selling a specific skincare brand because I am independent, though I do have my favorites (100%Pure).  Allowing me to give you my true opinion and expertise on products and treatment procedures.

I hope this post finds you healthy, happy, and beautiful!  Look for future posts that will include my holistic approach to skin health, views on products, treatments, DIY skincare recipes, food and beverage recipes, current fads, trends, as well as interviews from other professionals to help empower you to your best skin!

Tip 6 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Tip 6 of 365 from LGH&B: When selecting body scrubs the best choice is most often Sugar based. There are more skin healing and exfoliating properties in sugar then salt scrubs.

LGHealthnBeauty Instagram

Tip # 7 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Most people do not hydrate their skin properly, some not at all.  There are a couple key things you can do that won't break the bank.

1) Toner - all skin needs water moisture and using a toner throughout the day can help as well as cut down on skin over producing oils. Mist lightly over skin mornings before applying serums and or cremes.  Mist during the day, even right over makeup to help with hydration. Mist again at night after cleansing and before applying serums and or creme. (Clarify - steps to skincare are Cleanse, Tone, Serum (some people do not use a serum), Creme (some people do not use a creme)

2) Eat water rich fruits and veggies.  Foods like watermelon or cucumber help the skin hydrate from the inside.

3) Use a serum and cremes with Hyaluronic Acid. This ingredients helps skin retain water. This ingredient can be made from plants like sweet potatoes so be sure to ask your skincare professional the source of the ingredient.

Tip 5 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Tip 5 of 365 from LGH&B: Serums

Serums are the Number 1 most important product in your skincare steps. The amount used is about a pinto bean. Serums have the most corrective properties and this is where you will spend the majority of your money in a skincare product line.

Tip 4 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Tip 4 of 365 from LGH&B: Fun Day Friday tip

You don't have to be serious when you bath but you have to bath to seriously have clean clear skin.

Tip 3 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Tip 3 of 365 from LGH&B - Eye Cream

This is one product that most everyone over uses and wastes. The size for both eyes is the size of a grain of rice. Use your ring fingers to apply and gently pat around eyes, do not rub in.

Tip 2 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Tip 2 of 365 from LGH&B - Face Cleansers

Use about the size of a dime. If in a pump bottle usually the size is pre measured making it super easy. With really good products you may only need a 1/2 pump over time as your skin become healthier and less dehydrated.

Tip 1 of 365 - Your Fountain of Youth

Tip 1 of 365 from LGH&B for skin health - Portion size is key to making your products last. Rule goes less is more. Take less of any product. You can always go back for more, putting it back is harder to do and can lead to over use and waist of your good skincare products.

LG-Skincare beauty reviews #1

Date: 11/08/13   Review on a Retina based Skincare Treatment

I am approaching these blog posts from the view point of what I would want to know if reading or watching a video review on products and or services from the beauty industry.  I hope you find these Friday blogs helpful, fun, and worth your time. I also hope you will comment and ask questions.  I love to interact with my readers.

It has been really difficult to select my first item to review because there are so many and I don’t want you to think that just because I selected this item that it is my absolute favorite, because I have a number of favs.  In fact if you saw my bathroom you would probably think I had a beauty product addiction. I just view all these products as making me an expert. Wink! What can I say it is my business to know about products not only for my clients but for myself.  And there is sooooooo much to consider when picking what products are best and why.

Arbonne Intelligence Genius from Arbonne
Today’s review is on the brand new Arbonne Genius 60 Nightly Resurfacing Pads and Solution treatment.  I love this product!!  It has made my skin smoother and is reducing my forehead lines as we speak.  The bonus to this product is I can even use it on the backs of my hands, elbows and heels to help exfoliate these areas.  It can be tough to apply a mask treatment and leave it on these areas for any amount of time.  With the left over product in the pad, after I used it on my face, it is so easy to just wipe it over the hands, elbows and heels with no mess or wait time.  My heels had started to crack and now at the end of my first 60 days they are pink, soft, less dry, and not cracked. So happy!! This is a 60 day retina treatment that harnesses a plant based vitamin A with great results but less aggressive so every skin type can use it, even teenagers can use this without having to worry about stripping their delicate skin.  It helps with cell turnover to keep skin looking radiant, keeps dead skin and oils from clogging pores, and helps skin with firmness, evens skin texture, and brightness. The only thing I am not a 100% excited about is the texture of the pads that the solution is on, they are a little rough but won’t keep me from using it, the benefit far out ways the roughness of the pads.

This product is only sold through Arbonne Independent Consultants. A Consultant can be found by going on to the Arbonne.com site or (shameless plug – just contact me and I will be your Arbonne Consultant). J Order online, pay $20 to become a Preferred Client and get 20% off the $95 retail price every time an order is placed, may I say the twenty bucks more than pays for its self in a couple orders.  Plus there are some cool membership rewards, like money towards next orders. Get an even bigger discount with the Special delivery option.  *I’ll save my review on Arbonne and their business model for another post.

From a Professional view, this time of year is a great time to use a retina product.  The sun is less harsh and people tend to spend more time indoors.  Retina products used during summer can cause problems with pigmentation and redness.  While I have not used this certain product over the summer, yet, it is always smart when using retina products to wear a sunscreen, stay in the shade, and did I say wear a sunscreen?  (wink)

One last bit of advice. Really curious about this product, buy it, try it, Arbonne has a 45 day return policy any products. I have used Arbonne products now for 7 years and the only things I have ever returned were actually exchanges due to minor packaging problems nothing to do with the product itself.

Happy Friday!!!

BE KIND TO EACH OTHER!

XO'S

PS. The Friday product reviews will not be all Arbonne.  I will be reviewing all kinds of brands.  Come back and read for yourself. If there is a product that should be tried and reviewed by me, let me know.

Paying for Peace and Quiet

Does this picture look familiar? Resemble your life?

People are over worked and stressed for time! Over stimulated to the point they have nothing left to give to their families, friends, and passions. Permanently attached to their  multi-tasking, over booked, and electronic device obsessed lives. Women, men and believe it or not kids are suffering from lack of peace and quiet with the simple joy of reconnecting with nature.

Think...when was the last time you spent more then 30 minutes (not including last night's sleep)?

No cell phone, no one calling "mom...mom...mom" or "dad...dad...dad", no after school activities or watching TV while typing away on your work laptop to get caught up. Most people can not remember the last time they took time just for themselves with no distractions.

Why have people gotten to a point where they must be busy all the time?
Why do people not set aside time to allow for a much needed break to recharge?

Let us look at those who get skincare and massage treatments on a regular basis. Most think they are simply paying for great skin and healthy muscles. These is so much more to these services.  A  key part is paying for peace and quite. Dim lit room, eyes closed. No text reading. No TV drama. No computer work. No family. No all around over stimulated activity.

Helping people receive the benefits of peace and quiet is at the root of happy people. Everyone needs that place to go and recharge.

NOW....
Imagine - A dim lit room, relaxing spa music, a heated bed, a steamed towel rolled up and placed on the back of the neck. The custom smells of aromatherapy drifting into the air while a soothing facial or massage whisks clients away to total relaxation and bliss.
Who would not want to experience being pampered and taken care of?

The facts are most people simply will not set up a quiet room in their home and they will not ask the other people in their life to give them this quiet time to simply shut off electronic equipment and just be.

As a professional Esthetician I recommend:

  • Have a standing facial appointment every month.
  • Keep these appointments on a regular basis.
  • Turn your phone off or silent during the service.
  • Ask your esthetician to help you take this time and make the experience peaceful. *this means keeping talking between you two to a minimum.
  • Ask for hot herbal tea or warm water to help bring your body to a relaxed state.
  • Take in all the sounds, smells, sensations. Use your other sences instead of your sight for a change.
  •

For Home:
  • If you have the ability set up a quiet room in your home.
  • A bedroom or cozy chair are perfect spots to make a retreat from the outside world.
  • Remove TVs, computers, and turn your cell phone volume off.
  • Have relaxing music.
  • Aromatherapy candle or linen spray *good relaxations scents are: eucalyptus, lavender, cinnamon, sage. Stay away from citrus as it energizes

  • Create a spa setting in your bathroom.
  • Roll hand towels and wash cloths up and keep in a basket near the sink
  • Have Epsums salts in a container on the edge of your tub for easy reach when drawing yourself a weekly bath. It helps relieve tired muscels as well as make skin baby soft.
  • Candles always create the romantic feeling and scented ones add a dual effect with some light aromatherapy.
  • Classical or Jazz music is great as a soft back ground sound while soaking the stress of the week away.
  • Have a spray bottle of eucalyptis.
  •
There are many ways to recharge. One of my favorites is just a simple walk around a park or other green area.  Remember no electronics,  keep talking to a minimum, and enjoy what is around you.  You cannot fill other people's emotional cuts, like you spouse or kids, if your emotional cup is empty.

New Years Detox...

So you rang in the New Year with a bang, food, drinking, and not enough sleep...

Okay, some people rang it in that way. Never the less most have probably fallen off the healthy life style wagon over the holidays. What now? A quick fix to jump start 2013 and get back on track.

How?

~ Purge ~ Replace ~ Move ~

Step 1 - Purge

Remove temptation

Dump all the unclean processed foods in your house!
Meaning things with Refined Sugars, Dairy, Gluten, Soy, Coffee, Alcohol, and Corn items
Consider donating unopened none perishable items to a local shelter.

Detox your Skin and Hair with an at home Spa set like....

Arbonne Seasource Detox Spa Set:

It's everything you need for a great start to detoxification. $30.60 per full size product!

Personally I like a bath to ring in the new year. I use Arbonne's SeaSource Soak
SeaSource Detox Spa Purifying Sea Soak

Go for a Professional Service to help Detox!

Facials - The benefit will help to clean out pores, exfoliate dry dead skin, bring renewed blood to the face for healthy cell building, and move toxins out.

Massage - The benefit will help to move toxins out of the areas of your body that have allowed these to build up over the holidays.

Recommend: Massage Envy

Day at the Spa!

Enjoy a Facial, Massage, and Mud Wrap or Bath soak

Recommend: Burke Williams
Watch for deals on Groupon or Living Social to get the best bang for your buck.
Also check Yelp for reviews and deals.

Nothing like spending a day for yourself after a holiday of giving to others.

Step 2 - Replace

Replace unclean foods with Whole healthy foods.
Brown Rice, Quinoa, Fresh Fruits and Veggies, Water, Organic honey or Stevia, and Organic Meat

Use a smaller plate and smaller portions instead of the holiday loaded up over flowing plate.

Consider getting on a health eating program to follow.
Arbonne 30 Day Feeling Fit Kit that will take your first 30 days in the New Year to a whole new level for just $9 per day!
30-Day Feeling Fit Kit includes:
2 Protein Shake Mixes - Chocolate and/or Vanilla

At the very least:

1 - Herbal Detox Teas
1 - Daily Fiber Boost
1 - SeaSource Detoxifying Rescue Wash
Herbal Detox Tea
Use a Herbal Detox Tea, Daily Fiber Boost, and Multi Vitamin each day after the first 30 days.

Step 3 - Move

Try a couple of the following as options to move, but what ever you do....MOVE!!
(said with a low military tone)

Walk 1 mile per day brisk pace = won't have to change any thing else will maintain current weight.
Walk 2 miles per day brisk pace = will lose 10 pounds in 12 months.

Join a gym - get a personal trainer - take a exercise class at a local recreation center

Yoga every day 10 minutes morning and 20 minutes evening
This is a great way to start and end your day.
I recommend Rodney Yee AM Yoga and 20 minute Power Yoga DVD's

I hope my tips will help you start of 2013 off beautifully.

Summer Glow without the Sun

Have you put on your first pair of shorts and thought...Wow! my legs are white!
Now...the next couple of questions that come to mind are
  1. When can I squeeze in some tanning time?
  2. Do I risk using a sunless tanner?
  3. Should I buy a tanning salon membership for the next month?
  4. Maybe I should try a spray tan...?

All very good questions. As a skincare expert I can tell you the fastest way is to get a professional spray tan to help fight the ghost white leg syndrome. But you need to find someone who really knows what they are doing. I have seen it all too many times, a person ends up with orange hands and feet because the person spraying doesn't lighten the spray in this area. Or the person getting the spray tan hasn't exfoliated properly before.

The next best option is the sunless tanner at home. Don't be afraid of this. If you prep your skin properly you will have wonderful results. Keep in mind...sunless tanners can NOT be applied just before you head out the door. Here are the steps:

  1. Exfoliate your skin (meaning - shower, do any shaving needed, use a loofah and scrub entire body paying extra good attention to the front/back of hands, wrists, elbows, knees, tops/bottoms of feet)
  2. Towel dry your skin
  3. Apply sunless tanner evenly and in equal amounts in the areas you wish to tan (for the first couple applications I recommend using a body lotion in equal amounts to be used with your tanner...mix them together in your hand before applying)
  4. Wash hands
  5. Lightly wipe the areas that are listed as areas to pay extra good attention in step #1
  6. If your self tanner says to wait before dressing...I highly recommend you pay attention to this or your cloths may end up with a tan as well.

**The tip of applying your sunless tanner with a little body lotion works for me since I am on the extra white side...and my skin tends to be dry.

The product I use and recommend is:

Arbonne's sunless self tanner

Have a safe and glowing Summer!

Windy Days...watch out!

Be proactive on windy days and protect, hydrate, cleanse.
  1. protect - use a good moisturizer on windy days. night cremes tend to have a little more moisture to them which gives you extra protection from the elements. on windy days try using your night creme instead of your day cream. *if your day cream has spf and you use your night creme make sure you use some type of sunscreen to replace your normal on. or layer your night creme over your standard day creme.* and lastly use a lip protector to help keep your lips from chapping.
  2. hydrate - wind can rob your skin of precious moisture through evaporation, so be sure to drink extra water on windy days. this does not mean extra caffeinated or alcoholic beverages...these too dehydrate you.
  3. cleanse - with the wind whipping around extra dirt, dust, and pretty much anything from trees and flowers around in the air you skin will need an extra good cleansing before bed. i recommend to all my clients to wash 2 times at night. this applies to windy days as well...double cleanse but be sure to take some extra time during the cleansing phase to allow your cleansing product the time it needs to clean your pours. count an extra 30 seconds when cleansing each time and that should do the trick.

Always protect your skin at night with a good night time creme especially after a day of being out in the wind.

Hope you enjoy my tips and find them easy and useful!

Brown Sugar is your friend!

So recently I tweeted about home treatments of brown sugar and honey lip scrub and a brown sugar body scrub. Here is the step by step for you create these wonderful treatments at home:

Natural Brown Sugar/Honey Lip Scrub:

  • pinch of brown sugar

  • pinch of honey

Mix together to create a paste between your fingers and rub lightly over lips. Rinse with cool water. Yes licking it off would be just as effective but the acids in your saliva will dry out your lips...so try try to use the water and not your tongue.

Natural Brown Sugar Body Scrub:

  • a cup of brown sugar

Before you start your shower water, step into your tub with the cup of brown sugar. Rub small amounts over your body, taking extra time at elbows/knees/heels. You do not need to rub hard. Then rinse off in the shower. The sugar will dissolve and not cause your drain to clog.

Why natural brown sugar vs brown sugar or white sugar...? Natural brown sugar is the first step of processing from the sugar cane plant, it has a higher molasses content, and higher mineral content. Another benefit is the natural glycolic properties. Glycolic is great for anti-agin, it's hydrating, and helps to normalize skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

I hope you enjoy your home treatments!

Rainy Day Skincare...

So this morning in what is normally, sunny southern California, the weather is on day 3 of rain. Haven't seen much of the sun, but lightening and rain with wind gusts are prevalent. Quite unusual for this area. It is a nice change of pace but definitely causes more indoor activities then outdoor ones.

As I write today's post, I am enjoying my morning coffee with the patio door open. I can hear the rain water falling off the roofs and trees around my home. Actually the door is open because I woke up to pesky ants all over the kitchen and bathroom floors and had to spray. Rainy weather always brings those darn ants out. So really I am airing out my house from the ant spray fumes. It did however get me to thinking about indoor activities and its affects on the skin. Which is the idea behind today's post.

What are typical things you encounter being indoors: Heater, fireplace, bug spray fumes, with the house being closed up all the things that you put into the air from cooking to the whole getting ready/doing your hair/spraying perfume, all affect the skin. So on a day when you feel like there is nothing to do, you are cooped up inside due to rain or snowy weather, take some time to care for your skin. Cleanse, Exfoliate, Detox, Hydrate, and Protect.

Men's Rainy Day Skincare:

  1. Brush your teeth. It is always best to brush your teeth before cleansing or shaving your face. Tooth paste can irritate your skin.

  2. Cleanse your face 2 times removing the cleanser with a wash cloth. Work the wash cloth against the hair growth to help raise the hair above the skin providing you with a closer shave. Remember your neck in this step. *Arbonne's RE9 for men REVeal Exfoliating Facial Scrub and Cleanser is great. There are exfoliating beads in the cleaner. You will love this!

  3. Take a 5 minute hot shower. This will allow the steam to open your pores. Use a body scrub to help exfoliate. Guys take it from me...there is nothing sexier than a man who has soft skin! Take extra time to scrub your knees, elbows and heels. Do NOT use the body scrub on your face. *Arbonne's SeaSource Spa Foaming SeaSalt Scrub will help you with this and has a nice earthy scent. Will help to exfoliate and pull toxins out of your skin.

  4. Shave. Now that you have exfoliated and your pores are open, you will find that your shave will be closer and your skin will be smooth and soft. Super Sexy! *Arbonne's RE9 Men's Shave Gel

  5. Tone after shaving. It is important to close your pores and rebalance your skin's moisture after shaving. *Arbonne's RE9 men's Toner

  6. Moisturize and Protect. *Arbonne's RE9 Men's Moisturizer w/SPF

Women's Rainy Day Skincare:

  1. Brush your teeth. It is always best to brush your teeth before cleansing your face. Tooth paste can irritate your skin.

  2. Cleanse your face 2x at the sink *I use Arbonne's RE9 Anti Aging Creme Cleaner*

  3. Take a 5 minute hot shower, allowing the steam to open your pores. During the shower you can use a facial and body scrub. *For this I use Arbonne's RE9 REVeal Facial Scrub and Arbonne's Awaken Sea Salt Scrub. If you have super sensitive skin or suffer from a skin condition that prevents you from using a manual scrub you should use an Enzyem type mask for this step. Saian's Enzyme Mask would be a perfect choice.

  4. After the shower pat dry...do not wipe. This helps to keep the moisture on your skin. Towels can rob your skin of its moisture and even though you would think that the added moisture in the air from the rain balances that out, there are still plenty of other things in your environment that are stripping your skin of its moisture. (sheets, towels, clothing...)

  5. Apply a pore cleaning mask. Clay masks are great for this! Follow the directions on y our mask. *I use Arbonne's RE9 Deep Pore Cleansing Mask. This mask is good for oily/acne/and even dry skin types. The fact that Arbonne's products are Ph correct (5.5 Ph) allows this mask to be great for all skin types.

  6. After rinsing off your mask, Tone, Serum, Moisturize, and Protect. Remember to use your ring finger when applying/working around your eye area. *I use Arbonne's RE9 Toner, Transforming Lift Serum, RE9 Eye Creme, and RE9 Day Creme w/SPF. Those of you who use the Saian skin care line: Herbal Toner, Saphir Serum, Moisturizer, and Oil Free SPF 29 Sunscreen Spray.

Men & Women...Remember after exfoliating it is doubly important to protect your skin so moisturize and use an SPF! Drink lots of water too. Your body will continue to flush toxins and the water will help expel them.

Super Foods...and Anti-Aging

Free Radicals...you may have heard this term when people discuss Anti-Aging.
So what are they exactly?
Free radicals are what damage cells, cause inflammation, and age our bodies.

Antioxidants may be another term you have heard used around Anti-Aging.
So what are antioxidants?
We all know they are supposed to be good for us and supposed to rage war again aging but how?

Antioxidants are the super heroes in the fight against aging and readily available in most of the foods we eat. Antioxidants reverse the damage that free radicals do to our cells and decrease inflammation. These are found in what you may have heard called "Super Foods".

Super foods are packed with wonderful health saving antioxidants!
Now you are probably asking..."What foods?"

You may know some if you just take a few minutes to think about it.
What did you come up with?
Apples, oranges, broccoli, spinach, maybe grapes...
Okay, just a few that you may have come up with.

The key is to better understand where you are getting the proverbial "bang for your buck". Which foods give you the most antioxidants and help fight aging. Let's start with what is called the ACE in the fight against aging...Vitamins A, C, and E.

Vitamin A... Vitamin A is used in the fight against acne and found in topical products like Retin-A. Beware with this one because it is fat soluble and stored in your liver. Too much vitamin A can cause toxicity. As a person ages the daily recommended intake increases so check with your doctor and do not over do when eating foods that are known to have vitamin A.

Sources of Vitamin A:
Fish oil, eggs, liver are commonly known places to get vitamin A. But did you know that pumpkin, mozzarella cheese, carrots, and spinach are sources as well?

Vitamin C...
Probably the first thing that comes to mind are oranges but did you know that broccoli can give you 80% of your daily vitamin C? NEWBEAUTY magazine Summer-Fall issue states that a 1/2 cup of cooks broccoli gives you this. Can you imagine if you have a 1/2 cup of raw broccoli how much vitamin C you are getting. Remember RAW is better! Other places NEWBEAUTY magazine says you can get vitamin C are: red sweet peppers and potatoes.

What is Vitamin C good for?
It is one of the major building blocks for our bodies connective tissue, supports collagen production, and helps build the immune system.
Vitamin E...
